IRONMAN CANADA

Tereza Macel led from start to finish to claim her second runaway Ironman win in five weeks

while Jordan Rapp simply outlasted the rest of the men to take his first Ironman title at Subaru Ironman Canada.

As well, there was a slew of finishers from my home turf. It’s always good to see local athletes compete and do well.

On a sad note, 66 year old Walter Wiwchar of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., died after experiencing health problems during the swim of Sunday‘s race.

Coroner Mike Barrett said an autopsy was performed Monday and revealed Wiwchar drowned after experiencing an “emergency medical condition.” It was not a heart attack, he said, but a problem related to his aorta.

As reported in the Kelowna Daily Courier a review of race procedures is underway by organizers.

This hit a little close to home as a similar incident happened at 2005 Ironman Florida where Barney Rice died in hospital several days after being removed from the swim leg of the race.

This is sure to spark some fierce debate about qualifications and fitness of athletes in future events.

Yeah and it's almost always in the swim, too. I was at a half a few years back when a young guy (mid-30's) was pulled out of the water and died. Terribly sad and leaves quite a cloud over an event.
